SaaS Finance Glossary
Metric literacy for board, close, and reconciliation — not a billing encyclopedia. Each term covers what it is, how it's calculated, where it breaks, and how it shows up in the pack.
ARR & recurring revenue
How subscription value is defined, bridged, and sourced.
- ARR
Annual Recurring Revenue — normalized annual value of active subscription contracts.
- Billing ARR
ARR derived from the billing / subscription system of record — invoices, entitlements, and contract schedules.
- Bookings
Contracted value signed in a period — often ACV or TCV depending on company definition.
- CRM ARR
ARR inferred from CRM opportunities or account fields — useful for pipeline, risky as board source of truth.
- MRR
Monthly Recurring Revenue — the monthly view of subscription recurring value.
- Net new ARR
Period change in ARR — typically new + expansion − contraction − churn (policy-dependent).
- Pipeline
Open opportunities weighted or unweighted toward future bookings and ARR.
- Waterfall
Bridge from beginning ARR to ending ARR via new, expansion, contraction, churn, and other movements.
Retention & churn
Whether the installed base holds, expands, or erodes.
- Churn
Lost recurring revenue (logo or dollar) from customers ending or reducing contracts.
- Contraction
Decrease in recurring revenue from existing customers who remain active at a lower level.
- Expansion
Increase in recurring revenue from existing customers (upsell, seats, usage uplift under policy).
- GRR
Gross Revenue Retention — retention of starting ARR before expansion credit.
- Logo churn
Count of customers lost in a period — customer retention, not dollar retention.
- NRR
Net Revenue Retention — ending ARR from a starting cohort including expansion, contraction, and churn.
- Revenue churn
ARR lost from cancellations (and sometimes contraction) in a period — dollar retention view.
Board reporting & close
Period lock, narrative, and the package leadership actually reads.
- Board pack
The curated package of metrics, bridges, and narrative directors use to govern the company.
- Close
The process of finalizing a reporting period’s financial and operating metrics for reporting.
- FP&A
Financial Planning & Analysis — the finance function that plans, forecasts, and explains performance so leaders can decide with confidence.
- MD&A
Management’s Discussion & Analysis — narrative explaining results, drivers, and outlook.
- Variance analysis
Structured explanation of why actuals differ from plan, prior period, or forecast.
Forecast & planning
Outlook, cash, and scenarios that stay tied to actuals.
- Cash forecast
Projected cash receipts and disbursements — the liquidity view that must reconcile to ARR and billings stories.
- Rolling forecast
A continuously updated outlook that blends year-to-date actuals with forward plan assumptions.
- Runway
Months of cash remaining at the current net burn rate.
- Scenario analysis
Comparing alternate outlooks (base, upside, downside) on the same driver model.
Recognition & bridges
GAAP vs operating metrics — and the schedules that connect them.
Efficiency metrics
Growth spend and cash efficiency — always with the formula stated.
